Spring

In order for the forthcoming proclamation to work, we need to establish some parameters on the structure of this decree. First, we must define which states count as The Midwest. There are great debates about this online, but this is not online, this is just me sitting in my office by myself writing this, so there are no debates. There is just what I think. And what I think is that Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa are the states that constitute the Midwest. If you want to try to interject Missouri I’d point you to a quote by one Abraham Simpson who warned “I’ll be dead before I recognize Missouri.” Fictional character? Sure. But accurate. Ohio also doesn’t count and what even are The Dakotas? If you said that’s a character that Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton plays in a movie inside a movie, I’d remind you that the name of that character is actually Dacote. My definition of The Midwest stands.

With that part carved in stone, you might wonder what it means to be “From The Midwest.” Well, what that means is not that you grew up there in the 1960s and now you live in Arkansas or New York. And it doesn’t mean that you were born in Denver but now you live in The Midwest. It means that you were born here and you live here and because of this geographic consistency you know the things that a Midwesterner knows.

This is why when you tell a Midwesterner to close their eyes and picture spring, you can make the following proclamation with incredible accuracy. Close your eyes, Midwesterners. Picture the most beautiful spring day. Because I am a Midwesterner through and through, I can tell you that this exercise is easy to perform. And I can tell you what I see when I cast my memory back to a perfect spring day. Tulips and daffodils in bloom. Apple and cherry trees in bloom. Green grass and soft tops to the lake waves. Warm sun on my skin. Birds chirping. Fresh mulch in the beds. A gentle breeze with underlying warmth. Not heat, not a chill, just warmth. What a day that would be.

Do you know what day I just pictured? And what day every Midwesterner just pictured? May 15th. That’s what day. Mother’s Day Weekend. And that day has nothing to do with March and the fake spring that blows in on Sunday and blows out on Monday. It has nothing to do with April with those cursed snow showers and 45 degree afternoons. The spring we love, the spring we crave, the spring we can see when we close our eyes is May 15th. Which means that spring is still two months away, which is almost as depressing as hearing that your cousin just bought a house in Michigan.
