As if Lake Geneva needed more public adulation and recognition. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Lake Geneva to its 2009 List of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations. What? Janesville didn’t make the cut? That was a joke Janesville. Just what is this list? Here’s a direct quote from the story…
Since 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has annually selected communities across the United States that offer cultural and recreational experiences different from the typical vacation destination. From dynamic downtowns and stunning architecture to cultural diversity and commitment to historic preservation, the selected destinations boast a richness of character and exude an authentic sense of place.
And you thought my writing was verbose. Apparently the group liked our old mansions, natural beauty, and bustling downtown. The historic Black Point estate-turned-museum was probably one of the factors that put us over the top, but really, what isn’t to like about Geneva? You can do just about anything that you’d like to do in a vacation destination, to whatever degree you’d like to do it. Not many vacation destinations in the Midwest can offer the complete repertoire of activities and amenities that the Lake Geneva area offers. If you’re new to Chicago and have never been up here, come on up and give it a try. Whatever you do, do NOT judge Lake Geneva by a trip to the downtown only. To really experience this area, be sure to get out of the downtown, and get out on the water. Take a guided boat tour of the Lake or stoll down the shorepath for a few miles, after doing that, and only after doing that, can you judge Lake Geneva. Speaking of boat tours…
