Lake Geneva Farmers Market

I was driving through Lake Geneva last Thursday, and to my delight, discovered the first week of the Lake Geneva Farmers Market in full swing. This market is held on Broad Street in front of Horticultural Hall just about a block North of Main Street, and two blocks North of the lakefront. While the market is open from 8 am to 1 pm every Thursday for the remainder of the growing season, you’re being forewarned to show up relatively early if you want the pick of the litter. I absolutely adore this little mess of fresh produce, jams, and herbs, and I tolerate the hand crafted bird houses (just not for me). I even thought of selling my own demi glace at the market, but I don’t want to be one of those Realtors with two jobs, no matter how cool concocting and then selling my own velvety rich demi might be. Just be sure to stop by when you’re in town for some locally grown sustenance.

This market is in fact one of just several fresh produce stands that pop up around Walworth County in the Spring and Summer months. By the time July rolls around, Pearces Farm Stand on the corner of Highway 67 and County F will gladly sell you what is undoubtedly the best sweet corn I’ve ever tasted- and I’m a corn guy, so that really means something coming from me. When my father retired, he let out his closet farmer and worked for Mr. Pearce driving the tractor in the morning, while the farm hands walked beside it hand picking the sweet corn. My fathers pay for early morning corn picking runs? Just like it was the 17th century America’s: corn. Of the buckets of corn that would later that day be boiled or grilled, then bathed in local butter and unceremoniously devoured in my parents lakeside screened porch while seagulls called from the pier, one sacrificial ear would never see the boiling pot or the charring grill. For one unlucky ear, he would meat his end while being eaten, raw, on the ride home from the fields.

The sweet corn lady on Highway 50 in the Delavan inlet is hot on old man Pearce’s heels, and she’ll gladly sell you anything from corn to watermelon to some fabulousfresh blackberries. Peppers Market on County F between Fontana and Delavan is a wonderful spot for, you guessed it, peppers. But they also sell other types of produce including some beautiful little yellow bell shaped tomatos that I love, and you shouldn’t miss.

I don’t know about you, but the prospects of owning my own Lake Geneva getaway just makes my taste buds yearn for summer. My wife often says we should love to Illinois just so we can vacation here, but my daily commute might make me cranky. A little (or big) vacation home, a Saturday afternoon trip to the farmers market for the delights of the day, and a hot grill on your patio at night… now that seems just about perfect to me.
